Disaster Action Team

What is a Disaster Action Team?

The Disaster Action Team, commonly referred to as DAT, serves as the Chapter's first on-the-scene contact at the site of a disaster. These teams are not first-responders to the disaster, but rather they are the first step in the recovery process for those impacted directly by disaster.

The DAT team generally consists of a team leader, team member, and one or two team members in training. Together, the team conducts initial disaster relief fieldwork which includes providing emergency food, clothing, shelter, and financial assistance to affected clients. More specifically, responsibilities include:

  • Conducting damage assessments of affected dwellings and determining habitability
  • Collecting client information and completing appropriate processes and data entry
  • Assisting in maintaining readiness of disaster response vehicles and related equipment
  • Supporting the Mass Care function, including assisting with mass feeding operations

What are the qualifications to participate in DAT?

  • Ability to climb stairs, work in smoky, and damp buildings, and walk extended periods of time
