First Aid Tip: How to Treat a Headbutt

With the 2010 FIFA World Cup quickly approaching, I thought we should go over some basic first aid in case you find yourself in Marco Materazzi's place in the next few months.

As you may remember, France and Italy were in the finals at the 2006 FIFA World Cup. As you can imagine, things got heated... testosterone started pumping... French national, Zinedine Zidane headbutted Italian national, Marco Materazzi before getting ousted from the game (which Italy won 5-3).

So, if you get too excited while watching the games and someone headbutts you, check out following tips on how to treat your caved chest:

  • If the headbutting causes a stress fracture in your first rib, use a broad arm sling, soft neck collar and get a lot of sleep
  • If the headbutting causes a stress fracture in another rib, rest and ask your doctor for pain killers
  • If the headbutting causes sternal stress fracture, rest is the best healer

In case you aren't the headbutting type, chest injuries can occur from falls or blunt trauma.

In case you are, here's the video from Zidane's headbutt that was heard (and seen) around the world.
